On July 6th this year the city invited everyone to come to Tuomarinkylä, Helsinki, and try some traditional style hey making. This is an annual event, it is free, and all the work people get, as per the tradition, soup (delicious!) and coffee. The hey will be fed to the animals at Haltiala in the winter – another place we should visit soon again.
We went to the hey field with the kids, spent a good few hours in the fresh, kids raked and carried the hey, as well as played in it, of course. Us adults lifted it on the poles. We stopped for the soup, saw the sheep the city brought in for the day, went for a tractor ride and at the end of the day popped into the stables to see the horses next to.
What a great way to spend a day off!
What fun that must of been!
Yes, it was. Maybe we’ll make an annual tradition of it?!
You definitely should especially if you and your family had such a blast.
What a wonderful day
What a fun way to learn! That is so cool – and I’m not surprised the kids slept so well… I would have too! 🙂
I slept well too😊. But yeah, a pretty cool history lesson on farming for city kids.
What a great experience for the kids!
Highly recommended! We all had fun. And kids slept well after the day😃
I bet they did! 🙂
Love this post. I am very glad that You showed old Finnish tradition. Thank You. In Mikkeli, this tradition has also continued years.
